Description

Simargl is a mysterious zoomorphic deity of Slavic mythology, often depicted as a winged dog or griffin-like creature. He represents earthly fire, vegetation growth, and possibly solar energy.

Some scholars suggest Simargl may actually represent two deities - Sem and Rgel - merged into one figure, explaining his dual nature as both destructive and life-giving.

Mythology

According to some interpretations, Simargl was believed to guard the World Tree, protecting it from evil forces. His fiery nature connects him to both the destructive and purifying aspects of fire.

Other myths suggest Simargl served as a messenger between gods and humans, using his wings to travel between worlds and his fiery breath to purify sacred spaces.

Worship

Simargl was worshipped with fire rituals, particularly during planting and harvest seasons. Offerings included grains and herbs burned in sacred fires to ensure good harvests.

After Christianization, aspects of Simargl were absorbed into folk beliefs about fire spirits and the protective power of hearth fires.
