Description
Dazhbog is the radiant sun god of Slavic mythology, believed to ride across the sky in a golden chariot pulled by fire-breathing horses. He brings light, warmth, and prosperity to the world each day.
As the son of Svarog, the celestial smith, Dazhbog represents the life-giving power of the sun and was worshipped as a giver of wealth and protector of justice.
Mythology
According to legend, Dazhbog emerges each morning from his golden palace in the east, bringing light to dispel the darkness. At night, he travels through the underworld to return to his palace by morning.
Some myths describe Dazhbog as a cultural hero who taught humans agriculture and metalworking, connecting him to both celestial and earthly prosperity.
Worship
Dazhbog was worshipped at sunrise with offerings of bread, honey, and golden objects. His main festivals coincided with solstices and equinoxes, celebrating the sun's cyclical journey.
After Christianization, aspects of Dazhbog were absorbed into the cults of Saint John the Baptist (summer solstice) and Christ as the "Sun of Righteousness."
