Description
Roozanitsa is a benevolent Slavic goddess who determines people's fates at birth. She is often depicted as a beautiful woman spinning golden thread, representing the thread of life. Along with her sisters, she visits newborns to determine their destiny.
Mythology
According to Slavic beliefs, the Roozanitsy (plural) appear three days after a child's birth to write their fate in the Book of Life. Offerings of bread, honey and flowers were left for them. They could be persuaded to change a harsh fate through prayers and rituals performed by the family.
Cultural Significance
The Roozanitsa represents the Slavic concept of predestination and the importance of fate. Her worship shows how pre-Christian Slavs sought to influence their destiny through rituals. Elements of her worship survived in folk traditions about godmothers and naming ceremonies.
